How to seal a crack in concrete bird bath

Flex Seal will usually dry to the touch in about 3 to 4 hours and will be fully cured in 24 hours. Caring for Concrete Clean the bath regularly with a stiff brush and a moderate bleach solution to discourage algae growth. Rinse thoroughly, and allow the bath to thoroughly dry in the sun before refilling. This will break down any leftover chlorine in the basin and further inhibit algae growth. Apply a top coat of concrete sealer. Once the surface has been thoroughly cleaned, apply a concrete sealer.

Epoxy concrete sealers are the most durable, making them good for sealing garage floors and high-traffic retail environments. They will compromise the efficacy of the sealants if they do not dry. Brush on a light coat of concrete sealing paint or epoxy paint to cover the entire bowl. Brush a second coat of the paint on the bird bath and let it dry for 24 hours or however long the paint instruction says.

Make sure that the paint is dry before introducing the bird bath to water. A totally dried-up sealant bonds the concrete most effectively. To repair big cracks, mix a golf ball-sized amount of the polyester resin and a dime-sized amount of cream hardener.

Use a plastic spreader to mix the products. Use the plastic spreader to scoop the resin mixture and spread it over the cracks. If the resin sinks into the gap, apply another scoop to the gap. Be quick about applying the resin mixture to the cracks, though.

Once you mix the resin and cream hardener, your time to use the mixture is limited. Let the mixture dry on the cracks, then use sandpaper to smoothen it out.

After smoothing out the kinks, you can apply another layer of concrete sealing paint or epoxy paint for good measure. The final step is to fill the bird bath with clean water. Once cured the sealer is safe and non-toxic for wildlife and birds. Apply the Siloxa-Tek wet-on-wet. What does wet-on-wet mean? Apply the second coat immediately after the first coat while the first coat is still wet. This can range anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes depending on temperature and humidity. Let the patched birdbath dry for about two hours.

Cover it with a plastic sheet to finish curing overnight. Birdbaths have a tendency to crack after going through a freeze and thaw cycle. Small hairline cracks can be sealed with a waterproofing concrete sealer or epoxy, and larger cracks can be filled with a polyester resin.

Pour half of your cleaner into your birdbath and use your scrub brush to clean the entire bowl area. Allow your birdbath to dry for at least two days after cleaning it.

This step will eliminate failure of your repairs.
